PAT Testing Dublin

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) helps businesses identify electrical equipment that may have become unsafe through damage, deterioration, or regular use.

From computers, kettles and extension leads to power tools and cleaning equipment, portable appliances are used in almost every workplace. Undetected faults can expose employees and others to electric shock, burns, fire and property damage.

PAT testing typically involves:

✅ Inspecting the appliance, plug and cable
✅ Carrying out appropriate electrical safety tests
✅ Recording and labelling the results
✅ Identifying equipment requiring repair or removal

Effective PAT testing involves more than placing a sticker on an appliance. An inspection and testing programme should reflect the type of equipment, how often it is used, its working environment and the likelihood of damage. Equipment used on a construction site, for example, may need more frequent checks than equipment in a low-risk office.

Employees should also report warning signs, including:

🔌 Frayed cables or exposed wires
🔌 Cracked plugs or casings
🔌 Burn marks or unusual smells
🔌 Loose connections
🔌 Overheating or unusual operation

Any appliance that appears damaged or faulty should be disconnected and removed from use until properly assessed.

Regular inspections, testing, and employee awareness can reduce electrical risks and help maintain a safer workplace.
